Art Galleries and Local Crafts Johnston Art Foundry and Gallery

Great Arts...

Located 20 miles south of Marsh Harbour is the Johnston Art Foundry and Gallery. World-reknown sculptor and professor Randolph W. Johnston established the Foundry in the 1950's. The Johnston Foundry is known for its unique bronze sculpting craft, using a "Lost Wax Process" that emulates a technique first employed when bronze casting was discovered some 5000 years ago.

Today, the Gallery and Foundry are managed by Peter Johnston and Richard Appaldo. Appaldo, a french artist who was a student of Professor Johnston in the mid 80's, helped in the completion of several famous works, such as Sir Milo Butler, The Angel of Peace, and St. Peter Fisher of Man (on display at the Vatican museum). In addition to bronze scupluture, Peter and Richard also craft exquisite Gold and Silver jewelry.

Richard or Peter are happy to give tours of the foundry and explain how the bronze sculpture are cast. If you are lucky, you might catch them on "casting day" and you can see them pour 2200 degree bronze into their casts.
